Inevitable result says Army coach
“I think it(the scoreline) was a long time coming,” boasted Defence Force coach Ross Russell following his team’s 5-2 Digicel Pro Bowl Final win over Caledonia on Thursday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Striker Richard Roy scored twice in the first half and second half items by Ross Russell Jr., Glynn Franklyn and Jerwyn Balthazar completed the handful for the Soldiers while a converted penalty strike by Kareem Joseph and an item from Trevin Caesar handed Caledonia its two goals.
“We always get a lot of chances against Caledonia but always threw away a few,” continued Russell who suffered defeats against Caledonia in the Finals of the FA Trophy and Lucozade Sport Goal Shield against the Morvant/Laventille club this season.
He added, “This time we tighten up on our chances and that explains the margin.
I think we believed in ourselves a little more and allowed no one to hamper us. The players did what I expected them to do and I think they did it for ninety minutes and that was the key.”
Commenting on lifting the Digicel Pro Bowl, the Defence Force coach said, “It’s always good to win something, especially the Digicel Pro Bowl because we haven’t won it before. It’s also a great feeling winning a title this season. Since I started coaching the team, we have always won something every season and it shows that the guys believe in me.
It was a little tough for us not having a pre-season and starting the season in December. And it was an uphill task for us in defending the League title. But we finished fourth in the League and reached three Finals.”
