Defence Force looks to wrap up Digicel Pro League title

Defence Force looks to wrap up Digicel Pro League titleDefence Force will be keen to wrap up the 2013 Digicel Pro League Championship when it faces newly crowned Lucozade Sports Goal Shield winner, DIRECTV W Connection in its penultimate match at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva from 6 pm today (Monday).

With two matches left to play, Defence Force which last won the title in the 2010/2011 campaign leads with 43 points, four more than second positioned Caledonia AIA, while last year’s champion, W Connection and North East Stars are next with 32 points each.

For the “Teteron Boys” who are expected to be at full strength, the task is very simple. Win today and they will be crowned league champions for the second time in three seasons, and a 21st overall national league title.

However, a loss for Defence Force and victory by Caledonia over Central FC in the night’s second match at the same venue from 8 pm will see the title race being extended to the final round of matches on Friday.

Defence Force coach Ross Russell and his team will led by top scorer Devorn Jorsling (19 goals) be very confident going into the match having won their two league meetings this season against W Connection, 5-1 and 2-1.

But the “Teteron Boys” may be a little bit rusty as they have not been in action since their penalty-kicks loss to North East Stars, 5-4 on sudden-death after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the Goal Shield semifinal on April 19.

W Connection, on the other hand have been very active, as it qualified for the Concacaf Champions League group stages after topping its three-team round-robin group which involved Caledonia AIA and Antigua and Barbuda club Barracuda, followed by its capture of the Goal Shield on Friday last, 4-3 on penalty-kicks over North East Stars after a 0-0 draw at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

Two other matches are also carded for Macoya on Monday, with T&TEC FC meeting Stars from 6pm followed by St. Ann’s Rangers against Police from 8pm.
